Definition of Universal Product Code (UPC):
A two-digit barcode that is printed or pasted on almost anything sold in supermarkets or retailers, including books, magazines, sweets, etc. UPC not only identifies an item, but also provides real-time information about the quantity sold, as well as automated inventory checkout and traffic samples for information orders. It was introduced by IBM in 1973 for use in electronic POS applications and was replaced in 1976 by the European Item Number Code (EN).
