Are there different types of DVI connectors?
There are currently two prominent types of DVI connectors, DVI-I (Figure 1) and DVI-D (Figure 2). DVI-D provides a digital only signal, while DVI-I can support digital and analog signals.
What are the three types of DVI connectors?
The DVI connector on a device is given one of three names, depending on which signals it implements:
- DVI-I (integrated, combines digital and analog in the same connector; digital may be single or dual link)
- DVI-D (digital only, single link or dual link)
- DVI-A (analog only)

The flat pin on one side denotes whether the cable is digital or analog: A flat pin with four surrounding pins is either DVI-I or DVI-A. A flat pin alone denotes DVI-D.

Dual Link: As if three flavors of DVI are not confusing enough, it turns out that DVI-D and DVI-I also come in either Single Link or Dual Link. The basic difference is that dual link can support higher resolutions. Single link cables can be identified as having 8 pins missing, while dual link cables use all 24 pins.
Does Dual Link DVI support 144hz?
Single-link cables and hardware support up to only 1,920×1,200 resolution, but dual-link DVI supports 2560×1600. DVI is capable of 144hz refresh rates, so it’s a good choice if you have a 1080p 144hz monitor.
Is Dual Link DVI backward compatible?
Dual-link connectors are fully backwards compatible with single-link operation unless a display mode uses more than 165MHz pixel clock frequency or 24 bits per pixel. DVI-A connectors have 17 (12+5) pins, do not have a dual-link option, and only carry analog signals.
Will a DVI single link work with dual link?
Yes, a dual link port can support both single and dual link cables. Yes you can connect a single link DVI cable to a dual link DVI port but not the opposite.
Can I use a DVI-D Single connect to DVI-D Dual?
What cable should I use for 144Hz monitor?
Answer: To output 1080p content at 144Hz, you will need either a Dual-Link DVI, DisplayPort, or HDMI 1.4 cable (or better). However, note that some monitors with HDMI 1.4 are limited to 60Hz or 120Hz.
Is HDMI or DVI better for gaming?
HDMI is the best choice if you are just connecting a gaming console, blu-ray player or streaming device to your TV. DVI is a good choice if you’re looking to get the most out your high frame rate on a 1080p monitor. For now, we recommend gaming at 1440p or 1080p at high refresh rates like 120 or 144 Hz.
Can DVI-D Male connect to DVI-I female?
Yes. The only difference between DVI-D and DVI-I is that DVI-I also carries analog signals for use with a DVI to VGA adapter.
What is the difference between DVI Single Link and dual link?
DVI dual link, as the name implies, has more conductors than the DVI single link for transmitting signal. Single link DVI supports a maximum bandwidth of 165 MHz (1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz, 1280 x 1024 at 85 Hz) and utilizes 18 of the 24 available pins.
